- The pitching distance was increased. Before 1893 the pitcher threw from a box 5 feet 6 inches deep with its front line 50 feet from home plate. Starting in 1893, the pitcher threw from a pitcher's rubber 60 feet 6 inches from the plate, or 5 feet further back than the back line of the old pitcher's box.
