1939 Hall of Fame Election
206 of 274 votes needed for election
In addition to this regular election, a special election was held following the retirement of Lou Gehrig due to a soon-to-be-fatal disease. He was elected as well, but was not part of the induction ceremony that honored the three players elected in the regular vote. In fact, like all persons elected up to and including the Class of 1945, he never received a proper induction ceremony. This was finally remedied in 2013, a year when the BBWAA failed to elect anyone, when all twelve successful candidates from the period were honored at that year's induction ceremony.
