The 2006 Florida Marlins played the 14th season in franchise history. They finished the season in fourth place in the National League East. They are notable for exceeding expectations and remaining close in the Wild Card race until September, despite having the lowest payroll in the Major Leagues and using a large number of rookies.

While the Marlins finished strong, the beginning of their season was very tough. On May 21st, they were at 11-31 and already 14 1/2 games behind the NL East leaders. However, they began a remarkable turnaround after that low point, and on September 3rd, they made it back to .500, at 68-68. They were only the second team in major league history to recover from being 20 or more games below .500, the 1899 Louisville Colonels having managed to recover from being 22 games below par. On September 11th, they were even two games above the break-even mark at 73-71 and were now in second place, but they couldn't go any higher, as they went 4-11 over their last 15 games.
