The results of the 2012 Hall of Fame Election was announced on January 9, 2012. A total of 573 ballots were cast with 430 needed for election. Barry Larkin cleared the threshold by a wide margin in his third year of eligibility and was the only player elected to the Hall of Fame. It was a particularly weak year for first-year candidates, with only Bernie Williams receiving more than a handful of votes. Candidates who failed to gain at least 30 votes (5%) were dropped from future consideration.
Veterans Committee[edit]
In the second year of a new Veterans Committee format, candidates from both on and off the field were considered from the Golden era of 1947-1972. 16 ballots were cast with 12 being needed for election. If a candidate received fewer than 3 votes, his true total was not disclosed. The committee was made up of 16 members: 8 Hall of Famers (Hank Aaron, Al Kaline, Ralph Kiner, Tommy Lasorda, Juan Marichal, Brooks Robinson, Don Sutton and Billy Williams), 5 executives (Paul Beeston, Bill DeWitt, Roland Hemond Gene Michael and Al Rosen) and 3 media members (Dick Kaegel, Jack O'Connell and Dave Van Dyck).
Induction[edit]
The two successful candidates, Larkin and Santo, were inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Cooperstown, NY on July 22, 2012. On July 21st, the winners of the Ford Frick Award for broadcasters - Tim McCarver - and of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for reporters - Bob Elliott - were honored and receive their prizes. Santo was represented by his wife Vicki, who gave the acceptance speech on behalf of her late husband.
