Season Highlights[edit]
The 2017 San Francisco Giants began the season 6-13, the worst start for the team since 1983. Ace starter Madison Bumgarner, who had been the first pitcher ever to homer twice on opening day, April 2nd, was 0-3 at that point and had just gone on the disabled list on April 21st after injuring his shoulder while riding a dirt bike, portending further problems for the Giants. For his part, number 2 starter Jeff Samardzija was at 0-4, with a week of play left in April. Things did not really improve over the following weeks, as on May 16th, they were at 17-24 and still 8 1/2 games out of first place - after a five-game wining streak.
The Giants ended the first half at 34-56, 27 games out of first place. They were virtually eliminated from playoff contention at that point and had to begin thinking about rebuilding. Bumgarner came back after the All-Star break, but the pitcher who gave way to give him a spot on the roster was the #2 starter, Johnny Cueto, who went to the disabled list in his stead. On July 17th, the Giants hosted the Cleveland Indians for a make-up game and failed to sell out AT&T Park for the first time since 2010, ending a streak of 530 consecutive sellouts, the longest in National League history.
