Allan Simpson (writer)

Allan Simpson was the founder of the magazine All-America Baseball News in 1980. In 1983, Simpson moved the magazine to Durham, NC, where it was renamed Baseball America and was subsequently purchased by Miles Wolff. Simpson no longer works for the magazine.

He made his debut in baseball in the early 1970s working for the semi-pro Alaska Goldpanners and for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner as its sports editor. In 1975, he became the general manager of the Lethbridge Expos of the Pioneer League; among the team's players was future Hall of Famer Andre Dawson. A few years later, seeing that the Sporting News ignored college baseball altogether and had let its minor league baseball coverage decline to almost nothing, he started a magazine to cover that niche from his home in White Rock, BC. Starting from extremely primitive conditions, the magazine grew within a few years into one of the most respected publications in the industry. As it became more popular, Simpson was able to move its headquarters to a location closer to the news it was covering.

After leaving Baseball America, he became Vice-President of Perfect Game USA, a company that stages high school baseball tournaments and other baseball-related events.

He won the Jack Graney Award in 2003. In 2011, he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
