Following the 1932 season, infielder Andy Spognardi of the Boston Red Sox retired from baseball in order to enroll in Tufts Medical School. He practiced medicine in the Boston, Massachusetts area for over half a century.

In his only major league season, he had an on-base percentage of .400.
