Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Bryk pitched four seasons in the minor leagues, managed for six in the minors and has spent most of his baseball life as a scout. His son Billy Bryk, Jr. has been a coach.
Bryk was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1969 amateur draft by the Washington Senators. He debuted that season with the Wytheville Senators, going 1 for 1 at the plate. On the mound, he was 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA, allowing 21 hits sand 15 walks in 13 innings. In 1970, he pitched for the Burlington Senators (2 runs in 1 IP) and the Geneva Senators (1-2, 1 Sv, 7.20 ERA in 9 games). He spent 1972 with the Batavia Trojans, winning his only decision. Despite walking 15 batters in 18 innings, his ERA was a fine 2.50.
Though he had been known as Bill Brykczynski previously, he shortened his name to Bryk. He was using that name when he became player-manager of the Beeville Blazers of the unaffiliated Lone Star League. In his role as pitcher, he had a 1-0 record and a 4.74 ERA in 5 games. One of his three starts was a shutout. Control remained an issue, as he walked 17 batters, hit 7 and threw 5 wild pitches in 19 innings. He was extremely hard to hit, though, allowing just 8 hits.
Bryk was as a scout for the San Diego Padres in the 1979-1981, then moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates as a special assignment scout (1982-1983) and scouting supervisor (1984-??). He signed Rob Mackowiak for the Pirates.
In 2011, Bryk was a Major League Scout and Special Assistant to the GM for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
