Biographical Information[edit]
After winning 28 games for the Stockton Ports in 1954, Bob Thorpe earned a call-up to the major leagues the following season. He spent 1956 and 1957 in the Pacific Coast League, then was drafted in the 1957 Rule V Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Thorpe didn't pitch in 1958 and made just 4 appearances in the South Atlantic League in 1959 before retiring from baseball due to developing arm trouble.
With the minor-league 1956 Los Angeles Angels, his teammates included Steve Bilko, who hit 55 home runs, and future manager Gene Mauch.
Thorpe died in an electrical accident while working as an apprentice electrician.
He is not to be confused with another Bob Thorpe, who also played major league ball in the 1950's.
