Biographical Information

Czechoslovakian-born Carl Linhart , who had come to the United States as a youngster in the 1930s, was signed as an amateur free agent by the Detroit Tigers in July of 1948. The 18-year-old was assigned to the Lafayette Bulls of the Evangeline League and hit .404 in 55 games. The young outfielder spent the 1949 season with the Durham Bulls of the Carolina League, busting 30 home runs and hitting for a .311 average, also being chosen for the All-Star team.

In the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Czechoslovakian distance runner Emil Zatopek was a triple gold medalist in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races and in the marathon. That same summer, Carl made it into the major leagues in August. The left-handed hitting outfielder was hitless in three at-bats for the Tigers. This would be his only time in the Show. Linhart had one more fine season in the minors with the Albany Senators of the Eastern League, hitting .308 with 10 homers in 1955.

The outfielder spent the 1956 season with three different teams, bowing out after eight years (1948-1956) in the minors, having suited up with eleven different teams, appearing in 810 games, hitting 70 home runs and ending up with a career .284 batting average.

As of last notice Carl resided in Granite City, IL and was retired since 1993 from his job as a bricklayer foreman for National Steel.
