Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Carlos Vargas signed with the Seattle Mariners as a 17-year-old before the 2016 season. He played that year with the DSL Mariners, hitting .242 in 62 games, with 11 doubles and 7 homers. It was a promising debut, and it caught the attention of the Tampa Bay Rays, wh on January 11, 2017 acquired him in a trade along with OF Mallex Smith and fellow prospect Ryan Yarbrough in return for P Drew Smyly. He is the brother of Emilio Vargas.

He played in the minors until 2019, but never reached higher than Short-season Class A, which he did in his final season with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League. He hit .204 in 16 games that season. He had done better in 2017 and 2018, both years in Rookie-class, hitting .245 and .256 in 54 and 47 games respectively.
