Biographical Information

Outfielder/first baseman Chandler Redmond became the second player in minor league history to hit a "home run cycle" when he accomplished the feat for the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League on August 10, 2022. This consists in not only hitting four home runs in one game, but to have be a solo shot, a two-run shot, a three-run shot, and a grand slam. He did it as part of a 21-4 win over the Amarillo Sod Poodles. The only other player before him to have accomplished the extremely rare feat - which has never been done in the minors - was Tyrone Horne on July 27, 1998. Ironically, Horne was also playing for the St. Louis Cardinals' AA affiliate at the time, in his case the Arkansas Travelers. He also added a single and had 11 RBIs on the day.

Redmond was no hot-shot prospect. Already 25 at the time, he had been drafted by St. Louis in the 32nd round of the 2019 amateur draft, out of Gardner-Webb University. He had started his career in the Appalachian League in 2019 by batting .287 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 54 games for the Johnson City Cardinals. After sitting out the 2020 season because the minor league were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, he returned in 2021, splitting his season between the Peoria Chiefs of the High-A Central and Springfield. He combined to hit .259/.354/.474 in 96 games, with 20 doubles, 18 homers and 59 RBIs. He returned to Springfield in 2022 and before his historic game was batting just .228 in 72 games, with 13 homers. He had yet to drive in a run in August.
