Biographical Information

Charlie Smith, brother of Fred Smith, pitched 10 years in the majors. He also had some notable minor league seasons.

Charlie, like his younger brother Fred, was born in Cleveland, OH. Charlie pitched briefly for his hometown team, the 1902 Cleveland Bronchos, going 2-1. In 1904 and 1905 he was with the minor league Atlanta team, going 31-10 and then 13-8. He came back to the majors in 1906.

Charlie was with the Washington Senators pitching staff when young rookie Walter Johnson came up in 1907. Johnson went 5-9 (with a good ERA) that first year, while Charlie went 10-20 on a team which lost 102 games. Case Patten led the team with 12 victories.

Smith had a much better winning record with the 1910 Boston Red Sox, going 11-6. There he was on the staff with another young pitching phenom, Smoky Joe Wood, who went 12-13 at age 20 with an ERA of 1.69.

Charlie moved to the Chicago Cubs in 1911. During his years there, from 1911 to 1914, the Cubs won no pennants but finished over .500 each year. In 1915 Charlie went 17-8 for the minor league team in San Francisco.
