Biographical Information

Chieh-Hsien Chen has played for the Taiwanese national team and in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Chen was 1 for 11 with a walk in the 2014 Haarlem Baseball Week and played in the U-21 Baseball World Cup that year. He hit .250/.400/.250 in the 2015 World Port Tournament to tie Han Lin for the team lead in OBP. As Taiwan's main left fielder in the 2015 Asian Championship, he was 2 for 9 with two walks, 3 runs and two RBI for the Silver Medalists.

The Uni-President Lions selected Chen in the 2nd round of 2016 CPBL draft. He hit .345/.403/.457 with 2 homers in that year, not a bad performance for a rookie shortstop. Chen improved soon, locked up the starting shortstop spot and hit .387/.466/.508 with three home runs. He led the league in at-bats (437), doubles (34), triples (5), runs (113) and walks (53). He also finished second in hits (9 behind Po-Jung Wang), second in batting average (.02 behind Wang), second in OBP (.025 behind Wang) and collected his first Best Ten award this year as the league's top shortstop. He broke the league record for most consecutive at-bats without any strikeout with 98, and broke the team record for most hits in a season. The young infielder extend his condition the next year, when he led the league in hits (165) and runs (112). He was selected into the All-Star game and won the Best Ten award for the second year in a row. However, since he is not good at fielding and recorded a horrible 0.924 fielding percentage, the league decided to let the shortstop Gold Glove without a winner since Chen was the only eligible player. Chen was moved to outfield in 2018, but he only played 14 games there and was plunked by Chih-Lung Yang, which caused a right hand injury and ended his season.

Chen came back in 2020, and had a career year with a .360/.419/.461 batting line. He won his first CPBL batting title and led the league in hits (174), doubles (32) and OBP (.419). He also won his third Best Ten, this time as a outfielder, and became the first player to both won Best Ten in those two positions. In the 2020 Taiwan Series, Chen batted .310/.394/.571, and helped the Lions won the Championship. The Kaohsiung native didn't slowdown his pace in 2021, when he recorded 325/.399/.411 with 22 stolen bases. He finished fourth in hits (128), fifth in runs (69), sixth in walks (42), and second in batting average (.027 behind Chun-Hsiu Chen).

In 2022, Chen improved his defensive skill, and finally won his first Gold Glove award. He recorded a .309/.380/.422 line with 6 homers and was selected into the All-Star game for the first time since 2018. He finished sixth in hits (126), sixth in stolen bases (17), sixth in batting average (.309), and won the Best Ten award for the third year in a row. Chen then made Taiwan's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He started all 4 games, and recorded 5 for 14 with 2 RBI. He hit .315/.413/.397 in 2023, and he won both Best Nine and Gold Glove again. In the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series, Chen was 3-for-12 and the Lions were eliminated by the Monkeys in 3 games.
