Dan Duquette
Daniel F. Duquette
- Born 1958
Biographical Information[edit]
Dan Duquette worked in the scouting and player development department of the Milwaukee Brewers from 1981 to 1985, then was scouting director in 1986-1987.
Duquette moved to the Montreal Expos where he was director of player development from 1988 to 1990, assistant General Manager in 1991 and GM in 1992 and 1993. He was hailed for making sabermetrically-inspired moves in Montreal that took the franchise from last place in the NL East in 1991 to the best overall record in baseball in the strike-shortened 1994 season. However, he left before that season as the Expos were unwilling to meet his demands for a salary raise reflecting the success he had achieved during his tenure.
Duquette then was General Manager of the Boston Red Sox from 1994 to 2002. While in Boston he attempted to expand the Red Sox signings in the Far East, signing players like Sun-Woo Kim, Tomokazu Ohka, and Jin Ho Cho. He also received criticism for not re-signing Mo Vaughn and Roger Clemens. He was replaced by Mike Port in 2002 on an interim basis and ultimately by Theo Epstein on a permanent basis.
In 2007, he served as director of baseball operations for the new Israel Baseball League. He returned to the GM ranks after the 2011 season, accepting the position with the Baltimore Orioles. As he had done in Boston, Duquette immediately made a splash by signing players from the Far East. One of those moves turned out poorly however, when he inked teenage Korean pitcher Seong-Min Kim to a contract. It turned out that he had failed to clear the signing with Korean baseball authorities, as protocol demands, and the Korea Baseball Association was incensed, making a formal protest to Major League Baseball and announcing that it would exclude Orioles scouts from any future events it was organizing. MLB ruled in favor of the Koreans, voiding the signing on February 15, 2012, with the O's facing possible further sanctions.
The Orioles did well during his tenure, reaching the postseason in 2012, 2014 and 2016. However, they began a slide in 2017 which culminated in the worst season in franchise history in 2018, culminating in a mid-season fire sale. He and manager Buck Showalter paid the price for that, both being fired after the season.
He is the cousin of fellow GM Jim Duquette.
