Biographical Information[edit]

Daryle Ward and his father Gary Ward were the first father-son duo to both hit for the cycle during their major league careers. They were joined in 2019 by Craig Biggio and Cavan Biggio. Kevin Brown, Rickey Henderson, and Pete Incaviglia played with both Gary and Daryle Ward.

Ward was the first player to hit a home run into the Allegheny River behind PNC Park on the fly; the titanic blast came off Kip Wells on July 6, 2002; it would take more than a decade for another player to match his feat, Garrett Jones on June 2, 2013. Ward was given a 50-game suspension in January 2012 for a positive amphetamine test. He had not played in the majors for four years, and had been spending most of time in the Independent Leagues at that point of his career.

At all professional levels, Ward had 2,037 hits, 290 home runs and 1,289 RBI in 2,318 games over 22 seasons.

Ward became a hitting coach with the AZL Reds in 2016, Dayton Dragons in 2017-2018, and Chattanooga Lookouts in 2019. He was scheduled to coach Chattanooga in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. Ward coached Dayton again in 2021-2022. After the latter season he served as the Glendale Desert Dogs' hitting coach in the Arizona Fall League. Ward was hitting coach for Chattanooga again in 2023.

Daryle's brother, Agee Ward, was a forward on the Cal State Fullerton basketball team from 1988-1989 to 1991-1992.
