Biographical Information[edit]
Dave Zearfoss was 28 years old before he played in the majors, but that is understandable because he was in college during the ages 25-28. He caught for Washington College for four years, at a time when Al Burris was pitching there. Homer Smoot was also there for part of Dave's time there.
He was respected in the majors for his defensive ability but was considered a weak hitter.
In 1899 he played for Minneapolis.
Zearfoss was born on New Year's Day, 1868. His contemporary Frank Connaughton was born on New Year's Day the next year, 1869. Both finished up their major league careers at age 37.
". . . Dave Zearfoss . . . gained fame while doing the backstop work for Amos Rusie and Jouett Meekin." - Sporting Life, March 20, 1909
