Biographical Information[edit]

Dmitry Shtykher has pitched in the independent leagues and for the Russian national team.

Shtykher was 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in the 2013 European Junior Championship, losing to Sweden and Mikael Lindqvist and beating Ukraine and Mykola Liakhovetskyi; Liakhovetskyi was the only qualifier in the event with a higher ERA. He tied Jordy van den Heuvel for 5th with 12 strikeouts and tied Matthew De Permentier for 9th in IP (11). [1] He attended the MLB European Academy that year, the only Russian present. [2] He was MVP of Collegiate Baseball League Europe in 2014. [3]

The right-hander pitched for the Topeka Train Robbers in 2016, the youngest player in the league. [4] He was 6-4 with a 5.47 ERA and 1.82 WHIP, better marks than the team median in the high-offense Pecos League. He tied Cameron Cox, Skylar Janisse and Randy Keen for 4th in wins. He was roughed up in the 2017 B-Level European Championship, giving up six runs in two innings for Russia's highest ERA; Viacheslav Shmelev was next at 9.00. [5] He also pitched for Russia in that year's U-23 European Championship, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and losing to Andrii Boiko and Ukraine. [6]

Dmitry was back in the Pecos League in 2019 but was 0-6 with a 7.06 ERA for the Wasco Reserve. He tied for fifth in the league in losses. He also spent part of the summer with France's La Rochelle Boucaniers. In France, he had a 3-1, 0.76 record with 50 K in 47 2/3 IP and went 2 for 7. He was third in the French Division I in ERA (behind Kevin Canelon and Yoimer Camacho). [7]

Representing Russia again in the 2021 European Championship Qualifier, he struck out all three batters he faced in a win over Belarus, in relief of Victor Cole Jr. [8] Russia easily won a spot in the 2021 European Championship. In that event, Dmitry did a fine job with four hitless, scoreless innings. Against France, he relieved Rody Castelló in the 5th with a 5-2 deficit and shut them down over the next three innings. He struck out the side (Louis Brainville, Daniel Patrice, former minor leaguer José Paula) in the 5th. In the 6th, he began by whiffing Nolan Soliveres and Martin Vissac before someone made contact as Paolo Brossier grounded out. Russia closed it to 5-4 in the top of the 7th. In the bottom of the inning, he retired Léo Jiminian then walked Felix Brown, before picking him off. He walked former A's farmhand Andy Paz then Brainville hit into a force. Petr Balan took over but Russia got no closer. His other game, he got the win over Austria and Brian Fürböck. Relieving Phillies minor leaguer Anton Kuznetsov in the 7th with a 13-4 lead, he struck out Dominik Talir and Julio Rojas. He walked Philipp Eckel and Benni Salzmann hit into an error but Ferdinand Obed flew out. When Russia scored in the bottom of the frame, it gave them a mercy rule win. He tied Moisses Pargas for the most innings in the tournament without allowing a hit, 1/3 ahead of Chris Messer. [9]
