Biographical Information

Pitcher Doug Drabek was signed as a 11th round pick in the 1983 amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox and scout Terry Logan.

Drabek began his career with the New York Yankees in 1986 and was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the season with Logan Easley and Brian Fisher for Pat Clements, Cecilio Guante and Rick Rhoden. He was the 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner, becoming just the 2nd pitcher in Pirates history to win the award after Vern Law did it during their 1960 World Series championship season (back when it was given to just one pitcher). He led the National League with 22 wins during that season. He also carried a shutout into the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS before the Braves rallied for three runs in the 9th inning to win the National League pennant. He signed with the Houston Astros after the season as a free agent and was named to his only All-Star team in the strike-shortened 1994 season. He retired following the 1998 season.

Drabek was the pitching coach for the Yakima Bears in 2010, Visalia Rawhide in 2011-2012, Hillsboro Hops in 2013-2015, Mobile BayBears in 2016, and Jackson Generals in 2017-2019. He was scheduled to return to Jackson in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. Drabek was pitching coach for the Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2021 and Reno Aces in 2022-2023.

He is the father of Kyle Drabek.
