Biographical Information

Earl Naylor was a two-way player for the 1942 Phillies and also played in the majors in 1943 and 1946.

Naylor had been a minor league outfielder beginning in 1937 and hit at least .300 each year. His SABR Minor League Database page shows no indication of his having pitched until he came to the majors. However, in 1942, he pitched in 20 of his 76 games with the 1942 Phillies, a team whose 4.12 ERA was by far the worst in the 1942 National League.

As a position player he was primarily in center field in 1942-43, while in 1946 he did not play in the field.

Naylor never hit over .200 in the majors, although his minor league batting average in 17 years of play was .293.

He was a teammate of Jackie Robinson on the 1946 Montreal Royals and was the same age as Jackie.

From 1953-55 he was a minor league player-manager.
