Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Spurney was one of several players given a shot at shortstop by the 1891 Pittsburgh Pirates. Doggie Miller had played there a lot in 1891, although he was splitting his time that season between catcher, shortstop, and third base and had not previously played much shortstop. Spurney hit well in his three games in June, with a .286/.444/.429 line on a team that went .239/.302/.318 that season. Spurney was 19 at the time.

His last game was June 29, and on July 8, 1891, the team picked up Frank Shugart to play shortstop. Shugart was the regular for the rest of 1891, for 1892, and part of 1893.
