Elmer Bernard Guckert

Biographical Information[edit]

Umpire Elmer Guckert worked a single major league game on May 21, 1976. When the regular umpires refused to cross a food service picket line at Three Rivers Stadium that day, Guckert filled in, serving as the third base officiator. The game was between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs.

Guckert had been a left-handed pitcher for the University of Pittsburgh. He taught one year at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School then served two years at Fort Knox. He later taught and coached at Shanksville and Fifth Avenue High School, coaching city champion teams in basketball three times and winning one state title. He also coached baseball, cross country and swimming. He won the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Award in 1986 and was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in 1996. He coached Heisman Candidate Major Harris and NFL player Sam Clancy. After retirement, he delivered Meals on Wheels among other civic duties.
