Biographical Information[edit]
Ernie "Tex" Herbert had an impressive major league debut when he pitched six games for the 1913 Cincinnati Reds, posting an ERA of 2.08 and a WHIP of 0.981. He then jumped to the Federal League for two years with the St. Louis Terriers, putting up an ERA of 3.58 the first year in 18 games and an ERA of 3.38 the second year in 11 games.
As a hitter he was impressive, hitting an overall .371/.405/.429 in 38 plate appearances over those three years. On occasion, he also served as a pinch-runner.
Tex was in the minors in the Texas League during 1908-12 and then spent most of 1913 in the Virginia League, going 10-4 for the Portsmouth Pirates. After his time in the Federal League, he again came back to the minors with two Tennessee teams in the Southern Association, going 13-8 for the season. In 1921 he came back to the Texas League for 4 games.
