Biographical Information

Ernie Koy was an outfielder 13 years, 1930 to 1942, three in college, five in the Major Leagues and five in the minors. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II (GB) and never returned to baseball.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a bachelor of science degree in 1933. He played both football and baseball there.

He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies from 1938 to 1942.

He was a powerfully-built righthanded hitter with blazing speed. A Dodger regular in 1938 and 1939, he homered in his first major league at-bat on April 19, 1938.

Although his major league career was short, he made an impact. As a rookie, he led the league in Power/Speed Number, as he was second in the league in stolen bases, fourth in triples, and ninth in slugging. Showing his versatility, he was also in the top ten in hit-by-pitch and sacrifice hits. The next year, 1939, he was fifth in the league in doubles.

He played the outfield while Leo Durocher and Cookie Lavagetto were in the infield, and aging players with the Dodgers included Heinie Manush, Kiki Cuyler, and Tony Lazzeri.

A son, Ernie Jr., played for the pro football Giants from 1965 to 1970. Another son, Ted, was also an NFL football player.
