Biographical Information

Outfielder Estel Crabtree played part of eight seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals between 1929 and 1944. In 489 games, he batted .281/.339/.382, with a particularly robust look coming in 1941. Eight years removed from his last big league game, he batted .341/.439/.503 in 77 games with a personal best five home runs in 167 at bats. Crabby had played with the Rochester Red Wings from 1933 to 1940 in the meantime, hitting .300 five times and posting a .308 average with 91 home runs and 542 RBI during that span. Crabtree was player-manager of the Wings briefly in 1940 and 1942, giving up the position due to ill health both times. He was a player-coach for the Reds in 1943 and 1944. In 1953, he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.
