Biographical Information

Shortstop Frank Kellner is the son of former big leaguer Walt Kellner and nephew of pitcher Alex Kellner. His grandfather, John "Pop" Kellner, also played in the minors, and his brother, Joe Kellner, played college ball for the University of Arizona. Frank began his career with the 1990 Osceola Astros, batting .247/~.361/.309. He also played 18 games for the Tucson Toros, hitting .300/~.440/.317 in 19 games, one step away from the majors. In '91, Frank only managed a .216/~.286/.279 line for Osceola and .270/~.332/.338 for the Jackson (MS) Generals, again doing better at a higher level of play than he did in class A.

In 1992, Kellner hit .238/~.300/.316 for Jackson and he remained there in '93, batting .301/~.369/.423 and finishing sixth in the Texas League in batting average. Trailing Andujar Cedeno and Orlando Miller on the Houston depth chart, he put up a solid year in AAA in 1994 by batting .297/.390/.385 with Tucson. In '95, he only hit .180/~.298/.213 for Tucson in 28 games and returned to Jackson for most of the year, batting .316/~.395/.379 in a utility infielder role. 1996 brought him back to Tucson, where at age 29, he put up a .272/~.330/.370 season in his fourth time in AAA.

Frank finished up his professional career in 1997 by hitting .287/~.333/.383 for Tucson, now a Milwaukee Brewers farm team and .267 in 45 AB for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. After his playing career ended, he served as assistant coach of Temple (TX) Junior College for 20 years. He named head coach of St. Mary's University in 2024.
