Biographical Information[edit]
Fred Payne played six seasons in the majors and at least 10 in the minors, serving some years as a player-manager. He had four at-bats in the 1907 World Series, getting one hit and stealing a base.
He backed up Boss Schmidt during his time with the Detroit Tigers.
After baseball he worked as a construction inspector for nearly 30 years.
Through 2019, he is one of four major leaguers with the last name Payne. He and Lynn Lovenguth are the only players born in Camden, NY
