Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Gary Green played parts of five seasons in the majors and later was a minor league coach and manager.
Green played college ball at Oklahoma State University, and the school reached the College World Series in all four years he was there. After his senior year, he was the starting shortstop for Team USA in the 1984 Olympics. He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 1st round of the 1984 amateur draft with the 27th overall pick and signed by scouting director Sandy Johnson. He reached the majors with the Padres in 1986 and, after stints with the Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds, ended his playing career in the Kansas City Royals organization in 1995.
Green was a coach in the Detroit Tigers chain in 1997 and the Lakeland Tigers in 1998 and managed in the Tigers system from 1999 to 2004. He then moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, managing from 2006 to 2010. In 2011 he became the Pirates minor league infield coordinator. Green was bench coach of the Altoona Curve in 2021, Indianapolis Indians in 2022, and Altoona in 2023.
He is the son of pitcher Fred Green.
