Biographical Information

Gene Stone played 18 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969. He was mostly a pinch-hitter, but also played first base. He wasn't going to dislodge the regular first baseman, Dick Allen (most of Gene's appearances were before Allen was suspended for part of that season). Stone, age 25, was two years younger than Allen.

Gene was born in 1944 in Burbank, CA, attended Citrus College and began in the minors in 1963 in the Phillies organization. In all, he played six seasons in the minors, showing some power with a .460 SLG. In the majors, he hit .214, which was a bit lower than the Phillies team batting average of .241 in 1969.

In his first major league at-bat, he faced Tom Seaver of the New York Mets, and was walked intentionally so Seaver could face right-handed hitter Larry Hisle, who was also a rookie. [1]
