Biographical Information

After his playing career ended, George McBride managed the Washington Senators in 1921 and was a member of the Detroit Tigers coaching staff in 1925 and 1926 and again in 1929. After retiring from baseball, he made Milwaukee, WI his home - the city where he not only grew up, but where he made his major-league debut with the 1901 version of the Milwaukee Brewers.

McBride holds the record for the lowest career batting average of any player with over 5,000 at bats, at .218.

"George McBride's principal failing in the eye of Washington patrons of the game is that he cannot hit, and yet the official averages show that there are only three shortstops in the American League who had a better batting average, while there were 12 infielders in the league who batted below McBride." - Sporting Life of November 25, 1911, about McBride's .235 average in 1911, his career best
