Biographical Information[edit]

George Sprys was a minor league outfielder.

Sprys debuted with the 1940 Washington Red Birds. In 1941, he hit .304/?/.451 for the Fremont Green Sox and .346/?/.538 in 13 games for the Olean Oilers. He tied for 8th in the Ohio State League with 10 home runs for Fremont. In 1942, he appeared in 10 games for the Appleton Papermakers (.341, .634 SLG) and in 52 for the Charleston Senators (.275/?/.360 in 52 G). He was in the Air Force as a weather forecaster in World War II.

Returning from the War, Sprys struggled with the '46 Vicksburg Billies, hitting .226/?/.363. He spent the next two years with the Paris Red Peppers. In 1947, he had a big season, hitting .340/?/.565 with 30 doubles, 11 triples and 20 homers. He tied for second in the high-offense Big State League in three-baggers. He fell to .281/?/.432 in 1948. In 1949, he moved to the Temple Eagles and hit .264 with 31 doubles and a .376 slugging percentage. He ended his career with the 1950 Davenport Quads, going 5 for 32 with a double.

Sprys then was a long-time teacher and baseball coach, first at North Catholic High School (Pittsburgh) (1961-1984) and then at Quigley Catholic High School (as an assistant).
