Biographical Information

Middle infielder Henry Centeno played 5 seasons in the Houston Astros farm system.

Centeno debuted with the 1991 GCL Astros, hitting .318/~.356/.365 while manning second base; had he qualified, he would have ranked 6th in the Gulf Coast League in average. In 1992, he batted .249/.305/.293 as the starting second sacker for the Asheville Tourists; he scored 62 runs, third on the club behind Gary Mota and Bobby Abreu.

In 1993, Centeno hit .251/.320/.298 for the Quad Cities River Bandits and stole 23 bases in 32 tries. His .982 fielding percentage led Midwest League second basemen. He bounced between three teams in '94, appearing for the Osceola Astros (.288/.355/.337 in 49 G, 11 SB, 1 CS), Jackson Generals (.286/.375/.500 in 18 G) and he made it up to the Triple A Tucson Toros for 4 games (1 for 9, BB). He wrapped up his minor league career in 1995 with the Generals, hitting .256/.353/.320 while splitting second base duties.

In a 422 game career, he hit .260 with 39 doubles, 6 triples, and 6 home runs.

He played for Venezuela in the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games, winning a Bronze Medal.

Following his playing career, Centeno worked as a scout and instructor for the Cleveland Indians. He managed San Felipe, the Indians' Venezuelan Summer League affiliate, to a pennant in 2003. Centeno died in a car accident in the village of Boca de Uchire, in eastern Venezuela in January 2009.
