Biographical Information[edit]
Henry Gehring was an early practitioner of the spitball. A young Burleigh Grimes saw him pitch for the St. Paul Apostles and learned the pitch by imitating him.
Gehring, who pitched a couple of seasons in the majors, won over 150 games in the minors. Henry, who was born in St. Paul, MN, pitched 5 seasons for St. Paul and one for Minneapolis. His most successful season was 1905, when he went 32-5 for Wichita.
