Biographical Information[edit]
Henry Oxley is one of two players born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, although he moved at a young age to Massachusetts. He played in 1884, for two different teams.
His teammates on the New York Gothams included Hall of Famers Mickey Welch, John Ward, Roger Connor and Buck Ewing. His teammates on the New York Metropolitans included Tim Keefe.
The 1884 Lynn team had two Oxleys on it. In addition to Henry, there was also a George Oxley.
He was called on to serve as umpire for a game involving the Portland, ME club, and he was referred to as being "late of the Metropolitans". Source: Sporting Life, Oct. 22, 1884. Elsewhere in the same issue, it was stated that Oxley signed with the Portland club for the following year.
"Catcher Loughran has been released by the New York League Club. Oxley is to be transfered to the Mets." - Sporting Life, August 20, 1884, about the Gothams moving two catchers, and showing that it wasn't easy for a catcher on the Gothams to compete with regular catcher Buck Ewing
