Biographical Information

Hidetoshi Ikeda pitched for the Hiroshima Carp for eight years.

After college, Ikeda played for Yawata Seitetsu in the industrial leagues. He made his debut with Hiroshima in 1962, going 16-16 with a 2.44 ERA as a workhorse (27 starts, 30 relief appearances). He had a 21-13, 2.57 record in 1963 and was 5th in the Central League in ERA then fell to 15-12, 3.10 in 1964 and 13-17, 3.15 in 1965. In '65, he gave up 26 home runs, leading the CL.

Ikeda was 16-12 with a 2.77 ERA and .228 opponent average in 1966. He tied Makoto Inagawa for the league lead in gopher balls, with 20. The right-hander was hit on the wrist by a line driver during workouts early in 1967 and never recovered; he had a 1-5, 2.81 record in nine games that season. He was 1-5 with a 4.78 ERA and .299 opponent average in 11 games (3 starts) in 1968 and was 0-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 13 relief appearances in 1969.

Overall, Hidetoshi went 83-82 with a 2.83 ERA and .233 opponent average in 251 career games (172 starts). He later was a coach for both the Taiyo Whales and Chunichi Dragons and a commentator for Chugoku Broadcasting. He also worked in public relations at Hiroshima Kogyo University.
