Biographical Information[edit]

Holly Hollingshead was born and died in Washington, D.C., and his whole major league career was also spent in Washington, D.C. as a player and manager.

At age 17 he played for the amateur Washington Nationals in 1870 as a second baseman.

Holly was 19 when he played for the 1872 Washington Nationals, a team which went 0-11 and hit .228. Hollingshead hit .341, the highest on the team, and played second base.

The next year he was with the 1873 Washington Blue Legs, who won a few games, going 8-31. Holly had an off year, hitting only .257 (the team average was .261). He played center field.

In 1875, he was again in center field, for the 1875 Washington Nationals, hitting .247 on a team that hit only .195 and had a record of 5-23. Holly's .247 average was by far the best among the regulars on the team. He also was the manager for 20 of the team's games.

At that point, he was only 22, but his major league playing career was over. He did come back, however, in 1884 with another Washington team, the 1884 Washington Nationals of the American Association, as manager, going 12-50.
