Hall of Famer Arky Vaughan was one of the greatest shortstops ever. He played 14 years in the majors with a batting average of .318, which puts him at # 59 on the all-time list for career batting average. Honus Wagner, generally considered the greatest shortstop of all time, is nine points higher, and Derek Jeter finished at .310 in 20 seasons. Wagner had played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and was a coach for the Pirates during most of Vaughan's time with the team, giving Vaughan help on hitting. He made nine straight All-Star teams and had the highest single-season average of any 20th Century NL shortstop. Not just a singles hitter, he was routinely among the league leaders in numerous categories. The Criollos de Caguas (logo pictured) win the Puerto Rican League title for a record 21st time. Hiroki Kuroda, Motonobu Tanishige and Tomoichi Tanimura are voted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in the 2024 voting. Chien-Ming Wang, Cheng-Hao Peng, Hyotaro Kondo, Keng-Yuan Chen and Kuei-Hsing Lin are named to the Taiwan Baseball Hall of Fame. The Japanese national team wins the 2023 Asian Championship. Motoki Mukoyama is named MVP. Josh Naylor wins the Tip O'Neill Award as the best player from Canada over the previous season.

January 24: Today's featured birthday is that of John Scott, who turns 72. 1915 - The Baltimore Orioles (IL) vacate Baltimore, MD, moving to Richmond, VA to become the Richmond Virginians, out of fear of Federal League competition. From 1903 to 1953, it will be the only season in which the International League has no presence in the city. 1939 - Eddie Collins, George Sisler (pictured) and Wee Willie Keeler are elected to the Hall of Fame. 1962 - After decades of being a minor league powerhouse, the Southern Association disbands. One of the few leagues never to integrate, it had suffered falling attendance levels for years. 1990 - Isao Harimoto, the only 3,000-hit man in Nippon Pro Baseball history, is voted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame. 2000 - D'Angelo Jimenez breaks his neck in a car crash and will miss the entire season.
