Biographical Information

James Donnelly played six games as a third baseman and catcher with the Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association in 1884. He has long been confused with Jim Donnelly, who also made his major league debut in 1884, but who went on to a long major league career, and his playing record is often credited to the wrong man.

James Donnelly was born in Boston, MA and played in the minor leagues with Minneapolis and Lynn before signing with Kansas City. He played in Cambridge, MA in 1885 and 1886, and Medford and Randolph in 1887. From 1891, he managed the semi-pro Cambridge Reds. Off-season, he worked as a bookkeeper in Boston's Clinton Market and died in suburban Somerville, MA in 1933.
