Biographical Information[edit]
"Of the hundreds of players on Pittsburg's payroll over the past ten years, none, possibly with one exception - that of Otto Schomberg - ever made such a sensational first appearance as did Jesse Hoffmeister on Saturday." - from Sporting Life, July 31, 1897
Jesse Hoffmeister hit well during his one partial season in the majors in 1897. He is listed as the regular third baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, although he appeared only 48 times at the position. He had the highest slugging percentage of the team's regulars. However, he also had a fielding percentage of .792. He went on to play many years after that in the minors.
His major league debut was apparently spectacular. According to Sporting Life, he scored three runs and drove in six that day (July 24).
