Biographical Information[edit]
Third baseman Jim Lett spent three seasons playing in the minors for the Cincinnati Reds from 1973 to 1975. He hit .380/~.380/.440 in 13 games for the 1973 GCL Reds and .238/~.300/.347 for the Tampa Tarpons that year. In 1974, Lett led Florida State League third basemen in fielding percentage (.959) and hit .248/~.319/.324. He concluded his playing career with the Trois-Rivières Aigles and produced at a .257/~.333/.315; his .961 fielding at third was among the best in the Eastern League and his 13 sacrifice hits were second in the EL. His lack of power likely cut short his playing career.
Lett was a minor league manager in the Reds' chain from 1977 to 1985. He was the Cincinnati Reds bench coach from 1986 to 1989 and again in 1996. He managed in the minors again in 1990, coached for the Nashville Sounds in 1991-1992, and spent 1993-1995 as the Reds' minor league field coordinator.
Leaving the Reds, Lett was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays coaching staff from 1997 to 1999. He was the Blue Jays' assistant director of player development in 2000.
Lett was a Los Angeles Dodgers coach from 2001 to 2005 under manager Jim Tracy, and in 2006, he followed Tracy to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he stayed until the end of the 2007 season.
Lett coached the West Virginia Power in 2008 and moved up to the Huntsville Stars in 2009. In 2010, he became bullpen coach of the Washington Nationals, keeping the job until the end of the 2013 season.
