Biographical Information

Jim Mutrie managed major league teams in New York, NY for nine years, winning over 61% of his games and capturing three pennants.

He was a teenage cricket player who turned to amateur baseball in 1872. He became a professional in 1875. He began his managerial career in 1879. He helped put together the first New York Metropolitans team that joined the American Association in 1883 and won the pennant in 1884. He was the team's field manager and de facto General Manager under team President Joseph Gordon, who handled business matters. Following his success with the Metropolitans, he was poached by New York Giants owner John B. Day (who owned both teams) to become manager of the National League squad. He won two further pennants with the Giants, in 1888 and 1889. After baseball, Mutrie lived for decades in poverty.

According to the book Amazin' by Peter Golenbock, Mutrie is considered the founding father of baseball in New York City.
