Biographical Information[edit]

Joe Heeney played for Team Canada in the 1983 Intercontinental Cup, 1984 Olympics and 1985 Intercontinental Cup. He was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 37th round of the 1983 amateur draft, two rounds before Les Lancaster. Making his pro debut with the 1984 GCL Yankees, he hit .272/.356/.361 with 9 steals in 11 tries, fielding .958 as their main second baseman. He had the best OBP on a team with three future major league hitters (Mitch Lyden, Carlos Martinez and Tom Gilles. In 1985, he was only 3 for 32 with 9 walks for the Fort Lauderdale Yankees and made 8 errors in 41 chances.
