Biographical Information[edit]

Kun-Hong Pai was an Olympic Medalist who played five years in pro baseball.

Pai played for Taiwan in the 1987 World Junior Championship and 1988 World Junior Championship. He moved on to senior competition with the 1989 Intercontinental Cup and 1989 Asian Championship. He split catching duties with Cheng-Hsien Chang in the 1990 Baseball World Cup and went 2 for 10 with a double. He appeared in the 1990 Goodwill Games and 1991 Asian Championship (2 for 7) and 1991 Intercontinental Cup (1 for 21, opponents 2 for 5 in steal attempts, splitting catching duties with Chi-Hsin Chen).

Pai started ahead of Chang and Chen in the 1992 Olympics and hit .238/.227/.286 while allowing three steals in three tries. He had one run and two RBI in eight games. In the Gold Medal game, he was 1 for 3 but his teammates got just three hits off Giorge Diaz in a blowout loss. Taiwan's Silver Medal marked its best finish in baseball Olympic competition.

In November 1992, Pai was involved in a home plate collision so violent he had to be taken to the hospital to get stitches.

Pai turned pro in 1993 with the Jungo Bears and hit .247/.291/.326 while throwing out 50 of 134 attempted base-stealers. He fell to .223/.261/.321 in 1994 and .225/.258/.306 in '95. Moving to the Sinon Bulls, he hit .216/.249/.278 in 1996 and .252/.279/.277 in 1997. He also spent part of '97 with the China Times Eagles (.231/.289/.354). Overall, he produced at a .230/.268/.309 rate in his five Chinese Professional Baseball League campaigns.
