Biographical information[edit]
Landon Sims was a big star as a relief pitcher for the Mississippi State University, helping lead the team to the 2021 College World Series title. He was 5-0, 1.44 with 13 saves in the regular season, and in the final game of the tournament against Vanderbilt University on June 30th, he combined with Will Bednar on a 9-0 one-hit shutout. Earlier in the tournament, he and Bednar had combined to rack up 21 strikeouts in a win over the University of Texas. The plan was to turn him into a starting pitcher during his junior year in 2022, but after going 0-2, 1.15 in three starts, he was shut down for the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his elbow that required Tommy John surgery. He was still drafted 34th overall in the 2022 amateur draft, by the Arizona Diamondbacks in Competitive Balance Round A. Before going to college, he had played for the U.S. youth national team as a teenager.
After signing with Arizona for a bonus of $2.34 million, he was unable to pitch until 2023, when the D-Backs started him slowly by first having him play for their two affiliates in the Arizona Complex League, the ACL Diamondbacks Black and ACL Diamondbacks Red.
