Biographical Information[edit]
Cleon "Lefty" Webb pitched seven games for the Pittsburgh Pirates under manager Fred Clarke in 1910. Webb was 25 years old at the time, 11 years younger than teammate Honus Wagner. Lefty pitched mostly in relief, but got his two major league wins five days apart against the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching complete games both times.
Webb is one of the few major leaguers named "Cleon". He was born in Mount Gilead, OH, a couple hundred miles west of Pittsburgh. Lefty is listed as attending Ohio Wesleyan University in 1904-1908. Starting apparently in the minors in 1906, he got attention in 1908 when he went 20-14 for the Newark (OH) Newks. In 1909, he led the Inter-State League in strikeouts (152) and wins (14, tied with Everett Keener). He pitched for the Grand Rapids Wolverines/Raiders in 1909 and 1910 and made his big league debut in May 1910. Thereafter, he was in the minors again through 1914. Although the record is not complete, he won at least 79 games in the minors.
He appeared on a 1910 Tip-Top Bread Baseball Card. [1]
