Biographical Information[edit]
Projected to one day seize the shortstop job with the Boston Red Sox, Luis Alvarado was the 1969 International League Most Valuable Player, batting .294 with a league-leading 89 runs scored and 166 hits for the Louisville Colonels. He ended up moving all around the infield, unable to stick in one spot regularly, before being dealt to the Chicago White Sox straight up for Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio in December 1970. His bat never caught up to big league pitching (a career .214/.247/.271 slash line) and he bounced around after being dealt to St. Louis for Ken Tatum in 1974, finishing his career with three seasons in the Mexican League. He died of a heart attack in his hometown at the age of 52.
