Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Bernardo has played in the minors and for the Dominican national team.

Bernardo was signed by Baltimore Orioles scout Carlos Bernhardt in November 2005. [1] He hit .304/.372/.423 with the DSL Orioles in 2006, leading the team in average; he had 13 passed balls in 50 games at catcher but threw out 41% of those who tried to steal. He had similar defensive numbers (48% CS, 15 PB) for the 2007 GCL Orioles though his offense was down (.225/.316/.284). He hit only .197/.244/.230 for the 2008 Bluefield Orioles. He had 14 passed balls and again threw out 48% of would-be base-thieves. He led Appalachian League catchers with 70 assists but tied Jack Cawley for the lead with 7 errors. [2]

Moving up to the Delmarva Shorebirds for his first full-season minor league, he hit .213/.257/.277 in 2009; he threw out 31% of those who tried to steal, his lowest to that point. He was 1 for 6 that winter for the Tigres del Licey. In 2010, he caught 39% of base-stealers but was under the Mendoza Line, hitting .167/.223/.250 in 37 games for the Frederick Keys and .198/.244/.261 in 32 for the Shorebirds. He was 0 for 9 for Licey in winter ball. After he hit only .152/.237/.152 in 11 games for Frederick in 2011, the Orioles turn him into a pitcher, hoping to take advantage of his strong arm the same way other catchers-turned-pitchers like Kenley Jansen and Carlos Marmol did. He pitched very well for the GCL Orioles (2-3, 0.90 ERA, 15 K, 2 BB, 12 H in 20 IP). He was 0 for 1 for Licey that winter. Despite his fine pitching debut, he did not return to the O's system for the summer.

Bernardo was back behind the dish when he played for the Dominican Republic in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, splitting the role with Eric María. He showed off his arm again (0 SB, 3 CS for opponents) while playing error-free ball (22 PO, 6 A). He hit .364/.364/.364 with one run and two RBI in 11 at-bats. Only Jonathan Reynoso had a better average for the team. [3]
