Biographical Information[edit]

Marty Sullivan played five years in the big leagues with four different teams. Born in Lowell, MA, he played parts of two seasons for the Boston Beaneaters but was also with the Chicago White Stockings, the Indianapolis Hoosiers and the Cleveland Spiders.

During his playing days he was almost always called "Martin".

He mostly played left field. His best year was 1889, when he had an OBP of .404. As a rookie in 1887 he had 16 triples. He also umpired one National League game in 1889.

The book The Irish in Baseball: An Early History has a photo of Marty.

Sporting Life of January 13, 1894 carried his obituary. It mentioned his tendency to drink too much and his "readiness for a lark", recalling an incident in Italy with visiting team of players from the U.S. which resulted in Sullivan getting arrested. He was also remembered for his good hitting and fielding in 1890.
