Biographical Information[edit]

Masahiko Oishi spent nine seasons with the Taiyo Whales.

Oishi debuted in 1954, going 5-16 with a 3.79 ERA. He improved slightly, to 8-16, 3.52, in 1955. In 1956, he went 9-22 with a 2.72 ERA in 27 starts and 14 relief appearances (258 1/3 innings). Oishi was 12-11 with a 2.65 ERA and .228 opponent average during 1957 despite playing for a last-place team (52-74-4). He gave up 21 home runs, tying Noboru Akiyama for the Central League lead.

In 1958, the 32-year-old from Kofu was 11-14 with a 2.63 ERA and was 7th in the CL in ERA in his best season yet, but followed with a 7-16, 4.00 season in 1959. In 1960, Masahiko was used mostly out of the bullpen and excelled (9-9, 2.00, .218 opponent average). Had he qualified, he would have tied Ritsuo Horimoto for second in ERA behind Akiyama. During the 1960 Japan Series, Oishi retired all three batters he faced to finish game three. Taiyo swept the Daimai Orions to win the title.

Oishi saw limited action in 1961 (1-2, 5.30, .325 opponent average) and 1962 (1-0, 1.46) while battling a severed Achilles tendon which ended his career. Overall, he was 62-106 with a 3.06 ERA in 326 games (172 starts). He later was a coach and scout, then operated a sporting goods store and was active with Little League.
