Biographical Information[edit]
Mick Sharkey served as a replacement umpire in the National League for one game when the regular umpires staged a one-day strike on August 25, 1978. When the umpires walked out again, for a longer period, at the start of the 1979 season, he got to work another 9 games. All of these games were played at Riverfront Stadium in his hometown of Cincinnati, OH.
Sharkey had some prior professional umpiring experience, having worked in the Midwest League in 1974 and 1975 and in the Western Carolinas League in 1976. He also was an official in basketball, football, soccer, volleyball and softball. He spent 30 years as a NCAA Division I umpire.
